Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick

Matte and liquid lipstick formulas seem to be all the rage these past months, with every brand releasing their own collections and spin on the product. The makeup gods decided to smile upon me and bless me with the full collection of Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick. The full collection, including their collaboration shade with Youtube Megastar (and Canadian :D), Lilly Singh! Keep reading to see an in depth review, my thoughts on the shades, and some swatches!

Smashbox is definitely a brand that I’m falling for (hard) – and for good reason! Their products are well formulated and versatile, ranging from their eyeshadows and mascaras (reviewed here), primers (one of my July faves), and of course, their liquid lipsticks. I’ve heard many beauty bloggers, vloggers, friends, and makeup fanatics boast about the huge selection of shades, lasting power, and formulation of this product. The liquid lips also have a 4.5/5 star rating on Sephora Canada, with almost 60k loves…. and the line has only been out for two months!

I’m going to say this up front – I’m not really a fan of liquid lipsticks (or at least, I wasn’t.) I originally tried the Colourpop Ultra-Matte Liquid Lipsticks (review here), and my first impressions were that they left your lips feeling dry and tight. After about half an hour, I usually topped them with a bit of chapstick, which defeats the point of ultra-matte lips! My lipsticks of choice were typically glossy or soft matte formulas. The Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipsticks though, are a whole other story.

So… let’s delve into the review.

From the Sephora website: What it does: Perfected on-set in Smashbox’s L.A. photo studio, Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick leaves lips with ultra-lightweight, but bold color. This liquid-matte formula is infused with the lip-smoothing Smashbox Primer Oil complex for suede-soft lip color in an array of gorgeous, highly pigmented shades. The precision tip applicator lines and fills with one swipe of the no-drop reservoir, while Advanced Polymer Technology makes lip color stay put and look fresh and flawless for up to eight hours for smudge-proof, budge-proof, and non-feathering, carefree wear.

Formula and Texture

The lipsticks come in a clear, rectangular bottle with a black cap. There is a teardrop doe-foot applicator – the pointier side makes application a bit easier and allows for a more precise line. Each lipstick has 0.13oz of product. It can be used with or without a lip liner – I don’t typically use one, and it didn’t affect application or results at all. I always use a lip scrub before application, as I feel like this formula would emphasise cracks or flakes on dry lips. The applicator is in a tear drop shape, meaning the middle of the application helps to carry more product out of the tube.

These lipsticks are extremely pigmented. One swipe of colour gives you extreme colour payoff! The formula is very thin, and it applies quite wet. You can wear it boldly, or dot on the colour and quickly dab/smudge it in for a more subtle, faded effect. It also seems to stain the lips a bit, which prevents that weird ring from appearing around your lips as the product rubs off. I have not felt any discomfort in terms of the drying or matte effect. It feels like you have nothing on your lips; the formula doesn’t tug or crack either!

This formula lasts all day – seriously! I don’t know how they do it, maybe through the infusion of their primer oil, but the product looks fantastic and can survive two meals without completely coming off. It really lives up to the Sephora description.

Color Selection

There are currently 20 shades in the collection, which is absolutely wonderful! A spectrum of colours in both warm, neutral, and cool tones. This isn’t going to be a full collection of swatches because there are a few colours here that I’m probably never going to touch, so here are some of my favourites. Excuse my wonky tape swatches (I tried!!)

Baja Bound: My #1 favourite go-to shade recently! It’s a pink coral, but looks like more of a red tone on my lips! I don’t normally wear bright, bold shades like this, but I can’t get enough because this shade is just so gorgeous!

Thrill Seeker: A true bright red-toned orange. I absolutely looove orange lipsticks (I think they’re so fun for summer).

Bawse: This is the Lilly Singh collaboration shade, and it’s absolutely lovely! It’s a deep true red. I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I don’t typically wear red lipsticks but I do love this one! I’ll save it for that one day I’m feeling spicy 😉

Babe Alert: A pretty neutral nude rose. Very wearable for everyday use! I usually keep this one in my handbag.

Dream Huge: Looks very similar to Babe Alert in the tube, but has more of a purple/lilac undertone to it! More of a mauve nude. Still very wearable, and is more neutral than bright on the lips.

Let’s Dance: I’d probably call this my party shade, because I’ve worn it to parties and gatherings and have received numerous compliments! A deep, bright fuschia shade.

Disorderly: A deep brick red, a few tones darker than bawse. Perfect for grungey and vampy looks.

My favourite at the moments are Baja Bound and Babe Alert! The formula is so comfortable on the lips, it doesn’t smudge and it feels virtually undetectable! You can eat, drinks, and ~kiss~ without fear of that awkward lip line. My one concern is that it will emphasize dryness or flakiness, so be sure to use a lip scrub before applying.

Have you tried the Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipsticks? What are your thoughts?

Thanks for reading!

The thin formula sounds very appealing for matte liquid lipstick. I find that thick formulas usually cake up & emphasise cracks too. Love the colour range of these, they definitely are very pigments! Thanks for the in-depth review!

Dang I was really hoping you’d swatch them all! Just because you wouldn’t wear some of the colors doesn’t mean others won’t and it’s nice to see all of the parts of something as a cohesive whole. Especially when beauty blogging/reviewing a line of colors. Good job on the other stuff anyway.
