A Weekend In Oakville

Hello lovelies!

I do love a good staycation, as you’ve read about in my previous city guides on Port Credit and Burlington. It’s been a little while since my last GTA staycation guide. This post is a special one, as I have I teamed up with Visit Oakville to showcase some of Oakville’s hidden gems.

Did you know that I actually lived in Oakville?

…For about seven months during the school year during my post-grad at Sheridan. Funnily enough,   I never really took the time to explore what great things this town has.

I think that late summer is such a great time to go because there are so many events going on! Oakville is a pretty chill city, and a great one for a little summer escape away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, but it still has plenty of things to offer.

Venturing to far-away lands can sometimes be time-consuming and expensive – why not take a staycation? Today, we’re looking into some of the best spots to stay, eat, and visit around the Oakville and Bronte area.

Stay tuned til the end of the post as Visit Oakville is currently hosting an exciting contest with some great prizes – you won’t want to miss out!

Staybridge Suites

On Saturday, we checked into Staybridge Suites Oakville-Burlington – located just off the QEW and a mere 10 minute walk away from Bronte GO Station.

Our room was a king bed suite located on the 6th floor, and was laid out like a small apartment. The bed, located in a separate room, was very comfortable. There was a small kitchenette with a fridge/ freezer and a 2 burner stove top with some nice dishes and coffee mugs.

From what I gather, Staybridge is designed for longer stays and housekeeping is limited to making beds, replacing towels and emptying trash, M-F, with no housekeeping on the weekends unless specifically requested (linens are changed and a thorough cleaning once a week for those staying more than 7 days). This worked for us as we didn’t really need daily housekeeping.

The hotel also offers a great breakfast buffet, as well as access to an indoor pool and 24-hr fitness centre.

I would highly recommend Staybridge for your Oakville staycation!

Summer Festivals:

This past Saturday, Downtown Oakville hosted the TD Songs of Summer festival! Festivals are one of my favourite parts of summer, and it’s a shame that I haven’t been able to attend as many as I would have liked this year. Luckily, Downtown Oakville hosts quite a few events during the year, which you can read about here!

The festival featured multiple genres of music, delicious food and drink, visual art displays, performance art and crafts. Various stages were set up across the street and in the town square playing different genres of music. I actually caught part of West Hammock’s set and was really into what I was hearing! These local festivals are a great way to discover new bands and local artists

The weather was perfect and it was really nice walking around Lakeshore. There are also trails along the lake / Dingle Park that are beautiful in the summer time.

Bronte Heritage Trail

Oakville’s Bronte harbor is absolutely beautiful.  The Bronte Heritage Trail is a great way to explore the Bronte-Oakville area. There is also a handy app (for both iPhone and Android) to help you navigate the area. There are boat cruises and walking trails, as well as the nearby Bronte Village for little restaurants and some light shopping.

Where to eat: Borgo Antico Cucina Bar

Matt and I decided to drop by Borgo Antico – a hip Italian Restaurant right in the heart of Downtown Oakville. This place has received great reviews on Yelp! It is one of downtown Oakville’s ~hidden gems~ and it’s definitely worth checking out.

First off, this place does pasta right.

They use traditional Italian recipes that taste absolutely delicious – the right mix between homey Italian and great restaurant food. I’d say that it’s a great date night restaurant – it’s classy but fairly casual dress. You have the option to sit on the patio (great for summer nights,) or inside where it’s a little quieter.

We decided to skip out on appetizers and go straight for the main course. While we waited, our waiter brought us some bread and the most amazing chickpea dip (almost like hummus texture.) The bread was so light and delicious I could have inhaled the entire bag, however I really had to restrain myself in order to save room for the main course.

I had the linguine mare – a seafood linguine with snow crab, mussels, shrimp, octopus, clams, grape tomatoes and fresh pasta made in house. It comes in at a pricey $28, but it comes packed with delicious seafood! The noodles were perfectly al dente.

The bf had the bolognese that had the most wonderful sauce, and I can safely say we were stealing from each others plates during the night.

Overall, it was a great experience and we’ll definitely be back!

Fun Date Night Idea: Dave & Busters

Remember going to Chuck E Cheese as a kid? I think I only went once or twice (for friends’ birthday parties,) but I remember having a great time with all the arcade games!

There’s something super appealing about all the flashing lights and a fist full of tickets, right? Well now, you can experience the grown-up version at Dave & Busters! Think Chuck E Cheese but with alcohol and a sports bar. Matt and I dropped by for the first time.

Basically he realized that I will literally spend all of my game credits on coin games. Yes, I was a 5 year old plinko addict.

They have a wide variety of arcade games, ranging from racing games, coin games, DDR, shooters, sports…etc.

Dave & Busters is a really fun place for a date night or a night out with a group of friends. There are also lots of activities to check out in the Oakville Entertainment Centrum as well. Hit up 3 Brewers for some dinner/drinks, Demetres for desserts, Cineplex for a movie, or Oakville Putting Edge for some mini golf!

Finally – Visit Oakville is hosting a contest called #MyOakvilleMoment. All you need to do is submit a photo and caption with your favourite Oakville memory and you can win one of three Visit Oakville prize packages, which include stays at local hotels and gift certificates so you can experience your own staycation! 🙂

I hope you enjoyed this post, and let me know down in the comments if you’ve ever been to Oakville before!

*Thank you to Visit Oakville and Downtown Oakville for partnering with me on this post!
