Long time no see! I’m baaaaaack!
I’m so excited. Why, you ask? Because my love for games and beauty have crossed and created one of my favourite brand collaborations ever!
Let me introduce the Shu Uemura x Mario collection, featuring a wide array of hair care and skincare products. Today I’ll be featuring some of my favourite luxury haircare product ever! Yes, I’m setting the bar incredibly high with this one, but it was love and first, second, and third wash, condition, and style. (If you’re interested in my favourite drugstore hair care products, check out this post.)
I haven’t really experimented much with luxury hair care – I’ve tried some Phyto products here and there (which I absolutely love,) but I usually just stick to my Living Clean shampoo/conditioner. When complaining to my hairdresser about my out-of-control frizziness, she recommended I try a salon-quality product. I was over the moon when this Shu Uemura package landed on my door, even more so because it was Mario themed!
Shu Uemura has an iconic line of hair and skin care products. Occasionally, they team up with other brands to create gorgeous new packaging for their already cult products! I remember seeing the Maison Kitsune collaboration a few years ago because one of my favourite bloggers bought all of the eye shadow palettes.
Packaging. Where do I start? Oh yeah – its incredible. I get all the nostalgic feels when I see this – the classic Shu Uemura packaging adorned with mini 8-bit Mario characters! They really hit all the points here. Princess Peach doesn’t need rescuing, she’s too busy washing and styling her hair with Shu Uemura products.
The real stand out set, I must say, is the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Shampoo and Conditioner.
Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Shampoo
This shampoo does exactly what it claims to do. I’ll admit, when I first saw the words Cleansing Oil in the name, I thought about my makeup removers and how they have quite an oily texture. This, however, is not oily at all, and deep cleans the hair without leaving any oily residue behind. I also love that it is paraben and silicone free.
The scent is very pleasant and not over powering at all, which I love. It features a light fresh fragrance.
My scalp does feel much more balanced as I can go a second day without shampooing and my hair/scalp feels just as fresh! It does not foam up as much as other shampoos I’ve tried and my hair feels free of heavy silicones. One of the main reasons why I am completely smitten with this shampoo is that it just makes my hair feel so much healthier, and I started noticing the results after just two washes.
Any styling products are gently and completely removed from my hair and the result is a very light, clean feeling but not overly stripped at all. I highly recommend this shampoo if you feel like you have a buildup of product in your hair and need a deep clean.
Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Conditioner
After shampooing, I find that the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Conditioner makes my feel hair soft and bouncy. The scent lingers and it smells absolutely divine. Like I mean, holding your hair up to your nose and deeply inhaling because ahhhh that scent!
My usual routine is that I work the conditioner onto the middle/ends of my hair with my fingers, wrap my hair into a bun, and then leave the product in to sit for about half an hour (or longer if I’m having a bath – and yes, I will sit in the bath for like 2 hours hahaha.) My hair really absorbs the conditioner and rinses out feeling so soft and silky.
Lemme just say…this stuff is expensive! But oh so worth it. At $58 a bottle, I use this maybe every third wash or special occasion, and supplement in between with my regular Living Clean conditioner. The conditioner is also quite a bit smaller (250mL) compared to the shampoo (400mL), and I find that I use my conditioner on my hair than I use shampoo… so I really have to ration this out lol!
Shu Uemura Essence Absolue
Of course, it’s impossible for me to leave my hair after shampooing and conditioning. I’ll brush through a few pumps of my L’Oreal detangling spray and then work in the Shu Uemura Essence Absolue, which is a protecting and nourishing hair oil.
This is hands down one of my new favourite hair oils. I love using the Rusk Thermal Shine Spray to help smooth out flyaways, but I like working the Essence Absolue throughout my hair with my fingers. The fragrance is wonderful and the texture isn’t greasy. It softens my hair without weighing it down, and I love applying it before blow drying.
The price is quiiiiiite high though – for $69, you’re getting 150mL of product. But my reasoning is that the cost is quite similar to that of a high end of foundation, where you would typically only be getting 30mL of product. You don’t need much of this oil at all – a little bit goes a long way so I can see this lasting me a good while.
Shu Uemura Super Mario Master Wax
Now this is a product that disappeared from my vanity about a week after I bought it! Why, you ask? Well, I’m not much of a wax gal, but my boyfriend uses it almost every day! He ran out of his usual hair wax (some type of Axe pomade – is Axe still a thing?) and used a bit of this wax on his hair. He says he likes it because it holds his styling in place, and although the wax feels quite sticky at first, it dries down well and doesn’t feel crunchy.
Have you tried any of the Shu Uemura Art of Hair products? I’m IN LOVE with everything I’ve tried in the Mario collaboration, and can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the line! I have my eyes on the Shu Uemura Shusu Sleek Smoothing Treatment (I love a good hair mask) and the Shu Uemura Detail Master Directional Fixing Spray.
