Amika Polished Perfection Straightening Brush Review
Last week was Sephora’s semi-annual VIB sale. And I picked up the Amika Polished Perfection Straightening Brush! I had been eyeing it for a while and decided to get it during the sale.
I hate doing my hair. On 6/7 days, my hair is usually up in a ponytail or bun because I can’t be arsed to do anything with it.
I have really thick hair, so it takes forever to blowdry and straighten. I always wash my hair in the evenings, let it airdry overnight, and straighten it the next evening because I’ll take every moment of sleep I can get in the morning.
I had been eyeing the Amika Straightening Brush for a little while now. After watching numerous reviews on YouTube and researching on different blogs, I decided to pick it up. Not only was it 15% off (which is like nothing… damn you 13% tax!) but it came in a value set. Keep reading for my thoughts!
The Perfectly Polished Gift Set is the same price as the brush, except it comes with 3 extra Amika products:
- Amika Un.Done Volume and Matte Texture Spray
- Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo
- Amika Soulfood Nourishing Mask
This brush also comes with a drawstring bag for storage but it’s made from that cheapo plastic fabric that feels really cheap lmao.
The brush also comes in a mini travel version.
I have an Amika curling wand from years ago, but I’ve never tried any of Amika’s hair styling products.
Either way I’m not complaining, ~technically~ these products were ~free~ so I’ll take them.
Now… ONTO THE WAND REVIEW!
Now… ONTO THE WAND REVIEW!
The Amika Polished Perfection Straightening Brush according to Sephora:
A thermal straightening brush that instantly creates smooth hair in a single stroke with the power of a straightener and the ease of a hairbrush.
- Achieves sleek styles with zero static
- Preserves moisture for healthy hair
- Delivers shiny, smooth, frizz-free styles
- Ceramic “bristles”
- Power button with + and – buttons to adjust heat
- Swivel cord
The reviews are super high, and many claim that this styling tool is better than an actual straightener. Let’s put it to the test!
My hair profile:
- Thick, medium length (past shoulders), naturally pretty straight but gets kinks super easily.
- Prone to frizz, especially after blowdrying.
- I must use a detanglant or else my hair becomes one huge knot.
- My usually hair care routine goes: Shampoo, hair mask (30 mins), conditioner, detanglant, heat protectant, shine spray or hair oil.
I blowdried my hair until it was about 50% dry. I used my trusty L’Oreal Total Repair Replenishing Detangling Care Spray, followed by the Briogeo Rosarco Blow Dry Perfection Heat Protectant Creme, and let it airdry completely.
Then I went in with the brush. I set the temperature to 375F.
I split my hair into 4 sections: Lower, lower middle, upper middle, and top. It took me about 5 minutes to get through all of my hair! That’s about 20 minutes, compared to the 40+ minutes it takes to fully straighten my hair.
I basically took a chunk of hair and brushed through it slowly. I found it didn’t really matter whether I had the brush underneath or on top of the hair.
It drastically eliminated frizz. Not completely, but significantly enough that my hair looked much more sleek. I wasn’t able to get the little frizzies near my head so I had to quickly follow up with a straightener.
I usually put my hair in a ponytail during the work week when my hair starts to get frizzy, but with this brush it was super easy to brush out the kinks and waves.
My hair feels so soft and smooth after using this brush! The heat definitely makes the difference.
Some things to note:
The brush also has a swivel cord at the bottom (as I would expect for a $150 brush). The brush does not beep when it reaches the set temperature.
It does not have any auto shut-off features either, so make sure you unplug it when you finish!
Will this replace my straightener?
Do you like pin straight, sleek hair? Do you have a ton of baby hairs or flyaways? Do you have very curly or natural hair that you like wearing straight? If yes, then this probably won’t replace your straightener.
The Amika Polished Perfection Straightening Brush is great at smoothing out the “body” of your hair, but doesn’t fully straighten the root or ends of your hair. For example, I get quite a bit of frizziness at the base of my head (flyaways, baby hairs…especially around my ears/ back of head ) that the brush can’t catch, so I will usually follow up with my straightener to get right in there.
This brush will give you straight hair, but does not achieve the same effect as a straighter. The Amika Polished Perfection Straightening Brush will give you more of a ~natural~ straight with a bit of body than sleek, pin straight hair.
If your hair is already naturally pretty straight and you’re for a quick way to smooth out frizz or ponytail kinks in the morning or after a shower, then yes, this will achieve a smoothed out effect and you’ll probably prefer this to a straightener.
If you have fine hair, this will probably work for you.
I can’t really speak for anyone with natural, curly, wavy or coarse hair, but I’d recommend trying it out anyway. Sephora has a really good return policy so if you don’t like if, you can send it back.
Amika Un.Done Volume and Matte Texture Spray
Since we’re here, I might as well review the products that came with the set! First up is the Amika Un.Done Spray.
I originally thought this was a hairspray, but it’s not. It’s a texture spray.
As someone who rarely styles their hair, I was like wtf is a texture spray? From what I gather, this is great for adding volume, or a little bit of texture/grit when styling hair.
Basically a bit of va-va-voom in a can! It smells nice and has a bit of a chalky texture. It reminds me of dry shampoo but not as drying.
I think this is great if you have fine or flat hair, or style/curl your hair often. As someone with thick hair, I don’t really have much use for this.
Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo
As I mentioned earlier… I don’t really use dry shampoo. (These product reviews are turning out to be super helpful, huh!)
I only really use dry shampoo after particularly sweaty sessions at the gym. And that’s just to tide me over for a few hours before I shower and wash my hair. I typically wash my hair every 3rd day.
However, I tried using this Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo, and it feels light and not greasy! I sprayed this into my hair at night on day 3 hair and it did make it feel a bit cleaner.
For the price, I wouldn’t really consider buying these again, but it was nice getting to try out the products as part of the value set.
Amika Soulfood Nourishing Mask
Finally…a product I actually love using!
I love using hair masks. I use one almost every time I wash my hair, and sometimes when I have a nice long bath on the weekends.
Masks are my favourite way to rehydrate and treat my hair. I find that they really do make a huge difference in the texture and look of my hair!
The Amika Soulfood Mask smells absolutely divine. It has a really light, fresh scent! This stuff smells amazing, it’s not overpowering but it lasts in your hair after it’s dried. My mom noticed right away and asked me what perfume I was using hehe.
After one use my hair was shinier and looked healthier. Even before using the straightening brush, it felt so soft and nice (and even more so after using the brush!)
I really would consider repurchasing this mask after I finish it. It’s a bit expensive ($36 for the tub) but it’s definitely a special hair product.
What are your thoughts?
Have you tried a straightening brush before? Have you tried Amika products?
