Effortless French Beauty ft. Guerlain

When I say Iconic French Beauty House, what do you think of? For me, Guerlain springs to mind. I remember seeing the little pot of Guerlain Météorites sitting on top of the washroom counter when I was little, that where my mom had placed just out of my reach. When she wasn’t around, I’d climb up on the counter and use the puff she kept inside the tin to pat my face. I learned to love the sweet scent of violets that Guerlain uses to fragrance their products.

So I’m sure you understand my excitement when Guerlain invited me to their fall beauty masterclass! Hosted by Guerlain International Beauty Artist, Maxime Poulin, we learned about the autumn trends and new Guerlain launches. I’m partnering with illustrator (and bff) Emily Beaton to feature some of her illustrations.

First, let’s talk skincare. As you all know, I’m a complete skincare junkie and firmly believe that true beauty lies in the skin.

Guerlain Abeille Royal Youth Watery Oil

Probably the most luxe face oil I’ve ever tried – the Guerlain Abeille Royal Youth Watery Oil is an absolute dream. Starting with the packaging – this bottle is adorned with bees and comes with a little dropper. The oil itself comes in 3 different sizes.

This serum is amazing. It’s a face oil, yet it absorbs into the skin so effortlessly and makes my skin feel so soft and hydrated.

The name says it all – it’s a watery oil.

But what exactly does this mean? Essentially it doesn’t feel like an oil at all. It feels like a lightweight serum. The oil has been dispersed so finely within the product that it contains all the benefits of an enriched face oil without leaving a greasy film behind. With some thicker oils, I sometimes find that I break out and have to use them maybe 1-2 times a week, whereas I can use this product every day.

I’ve been using a few drops at night after applying toner and serum. It sinks in quickly and makes the skin feel plumped and hydrated. The little gold beads at the bottom of the bottle burst and completely dissolve, so you don’t even notice them during application.

Maxime told us that Guerlain has cultivated honey farms away from the stress and pollution from other commercial bee farms to ensure the highest quality honey is used for this Abeille oil. Honey has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties to promote youthful skin and healing against irritation. You can read more about how great honey is for skincare in this article!

While I’ve only been using this regularly for about a month, I can’t really say if it has improved my skin texture, but it does feel really nice on the skin.

I usually take a small blob of primer and dab it over my face, and work it in with my fingers. It sets quite quickly and allows for smoother application before foundation.

I like the texture of this primer for everyday use compared to my other primers that are more silicone based because this primer feels more like a moisturizer. I find that siliconey primers typically extend makeup wear on me, but they can be hit or miss because they can sometimes break me out. This one feels very comfortable for everyday wear!

Guerlain Active Blurring Base

I’m not really a primer girl. I usually reserve primer for special events, parties, conventions and cosplay, anything that requires me to wear a lot of makeup that I can’t really retouch throughout the day. Most days I skip straight to foundation.

However, I’ve been testing out this Guerlain Active Blurring Base and I’ve been enjoying it! It doesn’t feel like a siliconey primer, it feels very natural on the skin and helps to mattify any areas that produce extra oil. I have dry skin, but as the season change my skin sometimes tends to get a bit oily to compensate for the cold weather.

The website says that the primer contains “an elastomer gum combined with Guerlain PoreControl technology helps to visibly smooth and blur the appearance of pores and fine lines for a more beautiful skin and a skin texture that looks finer with each application.”

Guerlain Lingerie de Peau vs Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Aqua Nude

I actually own both foundations. Shortly before the event, I went out and bought the Guerlain Lingerie de Peau based on a recommendation from a friend. I was looking for a medium coverage foundation that’s more of a liquidy consistency. (As much as I love my Smashbox Studio Skin Foundation, it’s a bit heavy for me now since it’s a cream finish so I’ll swap it for the days when my skin feels a bit bleh.)

Coverage: medium to full

Anyway, I’ve been loving the Lingerie de Peau, I’ve been wearing it almost every day for the past month and a half. I tend to wear it as more of a light-medium coverage for work. Housed in a glass bottle, the Lingerie de Peau foundation features a black pump. I find that half a pump is enough to cover my entire face, and I use a brush to work it in. It applies well and dries down nicely, and doesn’t leave any streaks.

It feels super natural on the skin. It stays put all day on me (set with a touch of the Rouge Bunny Rouge Diaphanous Powder,) and feels incredibly comfortable on the skin. It dries down quite quickly, but can be build to achieve medium/full coverage. I wear the shade 01N, which is the lightest shade available.

In comparison, the Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Aqua Nude is the light coverage, incredible natural. I fell in love with this foundation, however I received the shade 02N Light which was a touch too dark for me! Clearly I didn’t tan enough this summer 😛 I’m hoping to get my hands on my correct shade though because this is a lovely foundation. The packaging is in a squeeze-bottle, which I love because you can easily control the amount you want to use.

Coverage: light – medium

Described as having a second skin finish, this lightweight foundation is intensely hydrating, long-lasting and light-textured. I’d say it’s my “good skin day” foundation – if my skin is looking particularly nice and I don’t feel like I need much foundation, I’ll use this.

It dries down quite quickly after application, so I find the best way is to disperse a little bit on the back of your hand and work it onto your face sections at a time.

Both foundations  are scented (which I love, but be aware in case you have sensitive skin.) The fragrance has notes of violet and rose with accents of rice powder, but I found that it doesn’t linger.

Because this post is about ~effortless French fashion~, I thought I’d include an little #OOTD from the other day! I love how French women always look so effortlessly fashionable. I aspire to be that chic! 🙂

I’m a lover of powder products, but recently, I’ve really been drawn to cream products. Beauty brands are really starting to step up on their formulations!

The new Guerlain Meteorites Baby Glow Touch CC Luminizer – a new take on the classic Guerlain Météorites. A cream stick with three different uses to achieve a rosy glow, the stick is split into three different sections – a subtle yet glowy highlighter, a matte bronzing side, and a soft pink blush shade.

I usually use different sides of the product on my face for their individual colours, however occasionally I’ll switch it up and use the flat end to create a tawny nude shade to apply just above the hollows of my cheeks.

I love the creamy texture and I find it blends in beautifully with my foundation! It’s a very subtle product but one that makes the skin look healthy and glowing. It’s super easy to travel with and combines the glow of a highligher, blush, and creamy bronzer.

Let’s look at one of Guerlain’s most popular products – the Terracotta Bronzing Powder. I’ve seen countless beauty gurus on youtube sing praises for this bronzer, and for good reason! The packaging is beautiful and sleek – a brown compact with multidimensional designs within the case that reflect light.

This is an ultra soft, incredibly smooth powder featuring a trio of different shades: a matte bone shade, a warm, light bronzing, and a slightly cool and darker contour shade.

These powders are so buttery! I’ve been using them for my regular bronze and contour, as well as eye shadows. They are so easy to apply as a light wash of colour across the lids. And best of all, it also smells like chocolate! Can I get a ~hell yea~?

Oh, and let’s look at this gorgeous packaging. This beautiful compact comes with the Guerlain logo imprinted within the case with a multidimensional, reflective design. The compact itself has a magnetic closure (so it doesn’t click shut), and houses a little mirror.

I simply love wearing this. The design is so elegant and the multiple shades mean I can use this for eyeshadow, bronzer, and contour.

I cannot express how much I love lip primer. Honestly though as someone who never stops eating and constantly touches their lips, lip primer keeps it all on. If I don’t wear lip primer, it’s either all over my face or I get that awkward lip liner ring. Not cute, not cute at all. It’s even worse when I wear red lipstick, which is why the Guerlain KissKiss Lip Lift is bae. When layered under a lipstick or liquid lipstick, it extends wear time by an impressive amount! This means that I can apply it and forget about it.

Personally, I lean more towards warm nudes or coral tones over bright pinks. When I first laid eyes on this Guerlain Intense Liquid Matte Creamy Velvet Lip Colour, I was a little intimidated. I think it was partly because of the word Intense, as I typically don’t do a bold lip and bright pinks aren’t my thing.

How wrong I was! This lip colour is incredibly versatile. I usually wear this by dabbing a little bit in the middle of my lips and blending it outwards. It fades out to a wonderful soft pink. You can also layer this on for a brighter, more intense look! The formula is very liquidy and dries down almost like a cream stain. When set, you can’t even feel it on the lips. Very easy to toss in your bag for all occasions, both day and night time! It fades beautifully as well.

We were introduced to three different lip products. But first, can we take a moment…

To talk about this gorgeous packaging? Maxime told us that the lipstick packaging was modeled after the luxe lipstick packaging of the 20s, when men would purchase jeweled lipstick cases for their lady loves. It reminds me of a block of gold. The packaging feels solid and heavy, and feels expensive. I love it, and I think any KissKiss lipstick would make a fantastic gift!

I don’t wear red lipstick very often. It’s a “special occasional” look for me. I think red lipstick is romantic, sultry, and a little bit mysterious. The Guerlain KissKiss Matte lipstick in Spicy Burgundy is the most beautiful, universally flattering shade of red in a gorgeous soft matte texture. It has a dry finish, but isn’t drying. It feels so comfortable on the lips. I found that it doesn’t emphasize dryness either, it smoothly glides over for an evenly pigmented lip colour. (However, it’s always a great idea to exfoliate your lips before wearing a bold lip.)

Paired with the KissKiss Lip Lift, I can rest easy that my red lipstick isn’t going to migrate across my face or fade awkwardly!

What is your favourite Guerlain product? What is your favourite fall makeup trend? How do you typically wear a bright lip?
